More Than a Scent: How Can a Candle Shape the Feeling of a Space?

There is a difference between a candle simply having a beautiful scent and one that truly changes the way a space feels.

The way we perceive fragrance is shaped by more than a single ingredient. It depends on the composition of the scent, its intensity, how familiar it feels to us, and the context in which we experience it. This is what matters to us at RIA: scent is not simply a name on a candle; it becomes part of the atmosphere of a space.

Scent Is a Complete Composition

Scented products usually combine multiple aromatic compounds. One study analyzing 44 fragranced products, including candles, identified nearly 300 different odor-active compounds across the products tested. [1]

So what we experience as one scent may actually be a combination of several layers working together to create its overall character.

Why Do Scents Make Us Feel Different?

Research suggests that the composition of a fragrance can influence the way we perceive it, while familiarity with a scent is also linked to how much we enjoy it. [2]

This is why some scents may feel fresher, while others feel warmer, softer, calmer, or deeper. These impressions are not fixed, however. Scent is personal, and our response to it can change with time, place, and memory.

Scent and Space

Context matters too. Research on ambient scent suggests that our response to fragrance is influenced by how well it fits its surroundings and how familiar it feels to us. [3]

At RIA, this is why we care about creating scents that feel balanced and present without overwhelming the space.

A Candle Is a Complete Experience

The scent experience of a candle does not depend on fragrance oil alone. The wax, wick, fragrance concentration, vessel size, and the way the candle burns all work together to shape the final experience.

That is why at RIA, we see the candle as one complete composition rather than fragrance separated from the details around it.

When Scent Becomes Memory

Perhaps one of the most beautiful things about scent is its ability to become connected to a place or moment.

A fragrance we love today may later bring us back to a home, a person, or an entire memory.

That is what we want scent to do at RIA: live within a space and become part of its rituals and memories.

Scented by Nature.
